The Chanel jacket in its purest form: Autumn 2006 ivory wool bouclé with a chunky black and beige braid on every edge, four patch pockets and gilt CC sunburst buttons, size 34.
The Piece
If one garment stands for the house, it is this: the ivory tweed jacket edged in contrasting braid, a shape Gabrielle Chanel introduced in the 1950s and Karl Lagerfeld returned to every season. Autumn 2006 versions are prized for their lofty wool tweeds and generous hand-finished trims.
This one, reference P29473, is a soft, open-weave ivory bouclé in 97% wool. Every edge, from the notched lapel to the four patch pockets and cuffs, is outlined in a thick twisted braid of black, beige and ivory yarn, giving the jacket its graphic outline. The buttons are gilt metal with a sunburst of rays around the CC, repeated at each cuff.
It is lined in ivory silk with a little stretch, and made in France. The cut is close and short, sitting just at the hip, and the size 34 suits a petite frame (roughly UK 6 or US 2).
An ivory Chanel jacket is the most versatile piece in the house’s canon: over denim, over black, over a summer dress. This one has the fullness of mid-2000s tweed that newer seasons rarely match.
