A long black gabardine jacket from the Autumn/Winter 2003 Y's for men collection, outlined in white hand stitching and marked with the line's red patch at the hem, as seen on the runway.
The Piece
Y's for men was Yohji Yamamoto's second menswear line, and in the early 2000s it carried some of his most direct workwear and tailoring ideas. The Autumn/Winter 2003 season leaned on wool gabardine, the house's signature cloth, and on visible handwork: tacking stitches left in place as decoration, patches sewn on as if repaired. The opening photograph shows the runway look this jacket comes from.
The jacket is cut long enough to wear as a coat. Wide peak lapels, flap pockets and the front edge are traced in a loose white running stitch, a tailor's basting thread that would normally be removed. A red woven patch sits on the lower front and a darker Y's patch is sewn at the centre back below the collar.
Inside, the body is unlined so the cloth falls freely, while the sleeves are lined in a pale striped cupro that flashes when the cuff is turned. There are three outer pockets and four inside, practical for a jacket meant to be lived in.
Worn over a white shirt and wide trousers it recreates the runway exactly; over a black knit it becomes a simpler, very long overshirt. The hand stitching gives it a softness that newer gabardine pieces do not have.

Condition
- Good pre-owned condition with honest wear.
- Small areas of damage at the inner collar along a seam, not visible from the outside.
- A few tiny pinholes and light marks to the cloth, shown in the photographs.
- Hand stitching and patches complete.
- Wearable as it is.
