A darker, more mature reading of the Yokosuka jumper: black satin, ivory raglan sleeves and tonal embroidery of an eagle and a tiger. The Yoshikazu Kuroda Japanese Classic Script label places it within the designer-driven sukajan revival, where postwar motifs are reinterpreted for contemporary wear.
The Piece
This Yoshikazu Kuroda Japanese Classic Script sukajan captures one of the most iconic visual languages in Japanese street fashion: the fusion of military souvenir jackets, traditional Japanese symbolism and American-inspired vintage styling. A black satin body with contrasting ivory sleeves gives a refined monochrome interpretation of the Yokosuka jumper (スカジャン); instead of the bright embroidery often seen on souvenir jackets, it embraces a darker aesthetic built around powerful symbolic motifs.
The silhouette is unmistakably sukajan: black satin bomber body, ivory contrast raglan sleeves, ribbed striped collar and cuffs, zip front, slanted front pockets and embroidered chest artwork. The front presents two creatures. The eagle, a common sukajan motif owing to the postwar history of Yokosuka, where American military bases influenced Japanese fashion, stands for strength, freedom, victory and aviation heritage. The tiger, one of the most beloved Japanese tattoo and textile motifs, symbolizes protection against evil, bravery, determination and warrior spirit. Together they form the East-meets-West identity that defines the sukajan.
The sukajan originated in postwar Japan, especially around Yokosuka, where Japanese craftsmen created embroidered jackets inspired by American military flight garments. Made first as souvenirs for American servicemen, they became internationally recognized through Japanese street fashion, rockabilly culture, Harajuku styling, denim and Americana movements and luxury fashion reinterpretations. This jacket follows that lineage while offering a cleaner, darker interpretation.
Its strength lies in contrast: black satin for a sleek nighttime appearance, ivory sleeves for vintage varsity balance, tonal embroidery for sophistication and traditional motifs for cultural depth. The monochrome palette makes it more versatile than brighter souvenir jackets, at home with selvedge denim, black jeans, military trousers, boots and leather accessories, and equally suited to an archive.
