Yohji Yamamoto Pour Homme SS2009 MR. BUTTERFLY Hand Appliqué Jacket, Black Linen and Cotton, Size 2

A soft black linen jacket whose back carries two white appliqué hands crossed into a shadow-puppet butterfly, with MR. BUTTERFLY lettered along the diagonal, from Spring/Summer 2009.

The Piece

Spring/Summer 2009 at Yohji Yamamoto Pour Homme was a collection of relaxed, almost careless tailoring, and one of its best-known images is this one: two hands, cut from white fabric and stitched onto the back of a black jacket, linked at the thumbs to make the shape of a butterfly, with the words MR. BUTTERFLY running down beneath them. It is a child's shadow game turned into a badge, and it has become one of the defining graphic jackets of the decade.

The jacket is a two-button single-breasted model with notch lapels, flap pockets and a chest welt, made from a 62% linen, 38% cotton cloth with a soft, slubbed handle. The appliqué is in polyester, edged by hand, and the jacket is lined in cupro. The front is entirely plain, so the reveal only comes as the wearer turns.

The Yohji Yamamoto Pour Homme signature label sits at the inside pocket, size 2, with product code HV-J75-301 on the composition tag. It is an original from the 2009 season.

It wears unstructured and slightly long, with a natural shoulder, so it can be worn over a T-shirt as easily as a shirt. Linen gives it a summer weight, but the black keeps it serious.
