An oversized Pour Homme cotton sweater knitted with sweeping red and white brushstrokes, known in Japan as the Namu knit after the Buddhist invocation its calligraphy evokes.
The Piece
Calligraphy and brushwork are central to Yohji Yamamoto's graphic language, from the painted script on his coats to the large-scale characters knitted into Pour Homme sweaters. This piece, reference HW-K19-099, is one of the boldest: an all-over composition of red, white and black strokes that collectors in Japan call the Namu knit, after the opening of the Buddhist chant namu.
The design is knitted in, not printed, as a jacquard in pure cotton. Broad red marks cross white sweeps on a black ground, as if a brush had been dragged across the whole body and sleeves; the back carries a second, equally dramatic composition.
The cut is generous, with dropped shoulders, a wide body, long sleeves and a simple ribbed crew neck. The cotton gives it a dry, slightly open hand and a light transparency, so it works across three seasons rather than only in winter.
The season is not recorded on the label; the reference code suggests the late 2010s, and we describe it as attributed to that period. Worn over black trousers it is a piece of wearable painting, and the graphic is among the most recognisable in recent Pour Homme knitwear.

- Good pre-owned condition with visible use.
- General fuzzing, small pills and a few attached fibres.
- A snag of about 5 cm on the right back, and snags of about 3 cm near the lower back and lower front.
- No other notable damage; the graphic remains vivid.
- Slightly sheer by design.
