Yohji Yamamoto Leather Mary Jane Flats with Knotted Strap, Black, EU 35

Black calf Mary Janes from Yohji Yamamoto's women's line, cut with a deep curved throat and a slim strap finished in a small leather knot, on a stitched leather-look sole with a low stacked heel.

The Piece

Yohji Yamamoto's women's shoes tend to look as if they were found rather than designed: plain, slightly old-fashioned forms made precise. This pair takes the schoolroom Mary Jane and stretches its lines, scooping the throat low and wide and sending a narrow strap across the instep, where it is tied off in a small leather knot instead of a buckle.

The shop record describes the pair as a collaboration with a Russian shoemaker, recorded as Cerevichki Otvichki; we pass this on as an attribution, since no co-branding is visible in the photographs. The construction is exemplary either way: smooth black calf with a soft, slightly rubbed finish, a natural tan leather lining, visible welt stitching around a dark sole and a 2 cm stacked heel. The Yohji signature is stamped on the sole and printed on the sock lining.

They are tagged EU 35, about 21.5 cm, with an outsole length of 25.5 cm and a width of 9.5 cm. Worn with a long black skirt and bare ankles, they are as close to the Yohji uniform as a shoe can be.

Small sizes in Yohji women's footwear are hard to come by; this pair will suit a collector with a narrow, petite foot.
