An unworn Autumn/Winter 2023 Yohji Yamamoto jacket in black wool gabardine, its front folded into fine diagonal pleats and tied at the waist with a long self belt.
The Piece
Autumn/Winter 2023 saw Yohji Yamamoto returning again and again to the pleat, folding gabardine into knife-sharp ridges that cut across the body at an angle. This jacket from the womenswear line is a compact, wearable expression of that idea.
The shape starts from a short work jacket: a wide point collar, a flap chest pocket and a snap front. From the collar a cascade of narrow pleats falls diagonally across the front panel and continues past the hem at the back, where it opens into a short pleated tail. A long belt in the same cloth passes through at the waist and ties loosely to one side.
The sleeves are long and close, finished with zips at the cuffs that can be opened to flare the wrist. Inside, the jacket is lined in cupro, and the snaps fasten cleanly so the front can sit closed or hang open to let the pleats move.
It remains unworn with its tags, as close to new as possible. Worn with wide trousers or a long skirt, it brings the energy of the AW23 runway to everyday dressing.
