For centuries Japanese devotees turned to Yakushi Nyorai, the Medicine Buddha, for healing and long life, and this Edo-period triad presents him between the bodhisattvas of sun and moon. Gilt and polychrome wood, a lotus base and aureole for each figure, and a central height of 21.5 cm make it a complete ensemble for a personal altar.
The Piece
This Edo-period wooden triad depicts Yakushi Nyorai, the Medicine Buddha, accompanied by his attendants Nikko Bosatsu and Gakko Bosatsu. Together the three form a complete healing mandala, symbolizing restoration of body, mind and spirit.
Yakushi Nyorai is revered throughout Japan as the Buddha who relieves illness and prolongs life. Unlike the Pure Land Buddhas, Yakushi remains actively engaged in the human realm, answering prayers for recovery, protection and balance, while Nikko and Gakko embody sunlight and moonlight, reinforcing the idea of uninterrupted guardianship across day and night.
Carved in wood and finished with polychrome pigments and gilding, the figures display classical Edo-period proportions and devotional restraint. Each retains its own lotus base and aureole, indicating intentional creation as a unified triad rather than later assembly. The set would have served as a personal altar ensemble or temple-side devotional object rather than architectural display.
