An Aero Leather Clothing Co. A-2 that began in the Second World War and served on into the Korean War, its lining stamped first for the Army Air Forces and then for the U.S. Air Force. On the back, a hand-painted blood chit in Chinese, Korean and Japanese turns a flight jacket into a survival tool and a document of East Asian geography.
The Piece
This A-2 by Aero Leather Clothing Co. is distinguished not only by its wartime origin but by compelling evidence of continued military use into the Korean War. The lining retains the original white Army Air Forces stencil together with a later black U.S. Air Force over-stamp, materially documenting the jacket's survival across the transition from the wartime Army Air Forces to the post-1947 U.S. Air Force. When the state changes its name and structure while the garment remains in service, the object becomes a witness. A U.S. Air Forces insignia is applied at the left shoulder.
Constructed in substantial dark horsehide and fitted with its original Talon zipper, the jacket remains notably strong in structure. Unlike many Korean War re-used A-2s, which were frequently depot refinished or overpainted, it appears to retain its original dark finish. That preserves texture and grain fidelity, protects the jacket's wartime identity and shows that it remained worthy of continued use without a cosmetic reset; it carried its past forward rather than being stripped of it.
The most serious element is the hand-painted blood chit on the back, believed to carry Chinese, Korean and Japanese text. A blood chit is not decorative art but a device of survival, a plea made legible to strangers in contested space: help me, return me, I belong to an allied force, you will be compensated. Chinese text belongs to the long lineage of rescue logic in the China theater; Korean locates the jacket in the Korean War; Japanese suggests occupation-era circulation, regional contact or mission adjacency linked to postwar U.S. positioning in East Asia. The result compresses a very specific American military map of East Asia in transition into a single garment.
Aero-made A-2s already hold a serious place in flight-jacket collecting for their wartime patterning, leather character and silhouette authority, and here the thick horsehide has carried both body and archive across two eras. Large wartime A-2s are increasingly difficult to find, and a rare 44 combining Aero manufacture, WWII origin, Korean War continuation, blood chit paint, East Asian multilinguality and original finish occupies several scarcity pools at once.
A major collector piece with museum-adjacent interpretive value, it appeals to advanced A-2 collectors, Korean War crossover historians, collectors of East Asian military material culture and institutions interested in rescue, language and aircrew survival systems.

Examination Points
The lining stamps and the blood chit paint are the jacket's documentary core. Key inspection priorities:
- Leather: grain compression at shoulder stress points, oxidation consistency under painted zones, finish continuity near seams and zipper tape, conditioning excess versus honest age
- Zipper repair: whether it is proportionate, old and narratively consistent
- Stamps: stencil edge softness, ink penetration, sequence overlap and fabric distortion around the marked areas
- Blood chit: pigment sinking versus sitting on the surface, crack pattern alignment with the leather's flex history, consistency of language spacing, wear matching high-contact zones, and whether the text fields age with the shell
