Carved from solid natural wood, this katana stand rises in bold shachihoko forms, the tiger- or dragon-headed carp that guards Japanese rooftops. Expressive and almost talismanic, it fuses functional samurai accoutrement with regional folk carving.
The Piece
The shachihoko, a mythical creature with the head of a tiger or dragon and the body of a carp, has long been associated with protection, resilience and authority in Japanese architectural and martial symbolism. Here its forms shape the whole stand, blending mythological symbolism with practical sword display and giving both stability and sculptural presence.
Unlike standardized dojo racks, the piece is expressive in character. Exaggerated silhouettes, stepped negative spaces and visible tool marks indicate hand carving rather than industrial production. Stands of this kind were often made in small workshops or by individual craftsmen for personal interiors, collector displays or local martial households rather than formal training halls.
This is not a decorative imitation but a functional stand designed to hold a Japanese blade securely while serving as a visual anchor within a room, an object of folk craftsmanship and individual expression.
