Bought at Johnsons on London's King's Road in 1982, this La Rocka flying jacket carries an oversized “Sky Bandit” back of aviator skull, Gothic script and red-and-cream panels. Stated as try-on only, it survives with a clarity that scene-worn subculture leather almost never keeps.
The Piece
Offered here is a black leather flying jacket by Johnsons La Rocka, acquired on London's King's Road in 1982. The reverse carries a large-scale composition reading “Sky Bandit”, with aviator skull and helmet imagery, Gothic lettering and bold red-and-cream panel work, while the front adds chest insignia, panel work and flag-derived motifs that extend the jacket's graphic language without disturbing the structural clarity of the bomber silhouette. It stands as an artifact of early 1980s British style culture, where leather outerwear functioned not merely as clothing but as coded allegiance and public identity.
La Rocka garments belong to a very specific ecosystem: King's Road, post-punk London, the rockabilly revival, fetish-informed tailoring, biker attitude and a graphic confidence that refused ordinary restraint. Johnsons and La Rocka sit where retail history, music history and style mythology overlap, which is why the label still matters across punk, psychobilly, rockabilly, underground fashion and collector circles. Here the provenance is not background detail: a purchase at Johnsons on King's Road in 1982 is what turns a good jacket into a cultural artifact.
The back is the event. The “Sky Bandit” composition works like a stage poster stitched into leather: skull-aviator imagery, a rising-sun or roundel-like red-and-cream field, large Gothic lettering and heavy theatrical patch and panel construction collide in a way too loud for mainstream fashion and exactly right for La Rocka. It reads less as decoration than as a declaration of identity.
The flying-jacket base gives the piece its authority before the graphics begin: masculine structure, shoulder command, compression at the waist and enough military-adjacent force to carry theatrical embellishment. At the front, the chest insignia and a Japanese flag-derived motif widen the symbolic vocabulary in La Rocka's hybrid language of Americana, militaria, biker and rock'n'roll imagery, a house that collaged symbolic power rather than obeying neat historical boundaries. The front still functions as a jacket rather than a preview of the back, a balance where loud subculture jackets often fail.
Subcultural garments usually survive through use, sweat, nightlife, smoke, alteration and attrition. To find an early La Rocka example this clean, with direct-era provenance, is a different proposition altogether: purity of form, clarity of color, integrity of appliqué and display power without restoration anxiety. The measured dimensions sit in a wearable zone, neither archive-small nor oversized, so the jacket can serve on a collector's body, on a mannequin, in a fashion archive or in editorial and exhibition use.
