Chaqueta de gira reversible del Ejército de EE. UU. de la era de Vietnam, bordado amarillo de Corea 1969-1970 con el nombre Trujillo, Sukajan

A reversible souvenir tour jacket of U.S. Army association from the Vietnam War period, its high-visibility yellow side worked with a circular emblem naming Korea, the years 1969–1970 and the name Trujillo. Military symbolism and personal narrative meet in thread: a wearable diary rather than issued equipment.

The Piece

This reversible tour jacket is executed in a yellow and black color scheme, the back of the yellow side extensively embroidered with a large circular composition that brings together geographical, chronological and personal elements: the word “Korea” arched across the top, a central map and insignia motif, the dates 1969–1970, motto text worked within the circular field and, on a lower tag, the name “Trujillo”, a full narrative patch stitched directly into the garment. The design is characteristic of the post-deployment souvenir garments produced during the Vietnam War period, and the piece illustrates how military clothing evolved into a medium of personal expression and memory.

Souvenir jackets of this kind, known in Japan as sukajan, grew out of the embroidered satin jackets made for American servicemen in postwar Japan and East Asia. Unlike an A-2 or an Irvin, this garment was never issued for combat. It was made during or after service as a record of memory, identity and personal narrative, closer to a wearable diary than to equipment.

Most tour jackets lean toward black, olive and other subdued tones; this one breaks away completely. The yellow surface gives it immediate visual dominance, high emotional visibility and a clearly non-combat identity, turning memory into announcement. The embroidery is centralized, radial and information-heavy, carrying geography in the map, time in 1969–1970, identity in the name and symbolism in the military emblems: a data-rich surface.

The presence of Korea on a Vietnam-era jacket suggests multi-theater service, unit lineage or deployment crossover, or symbolic reference beyond a single war. This is not uncommon, and it reflects the fluidity of Cold War military presence. The name Trujillo is the human anchor: without it the jacket would be general; with it, the piece is tied to an individual, a life and a timeline.

Tour jackets often carry two faces, one public, bold and decorated, the other subdued or secondary, and that duality mirrors the contrast between soldier identity and personal life. Because the narrative is embroidered rather than painted, it does not flake; the thread retains its structure and the design remains legible over time, giving the jacket long-term narrative durability. It will speak to Vietnam War collectors, tour jacket specialists, textile historians and narrative-driven collectors.
