A Vanson motorcycle jacket in vivid yellow cowhide made for Comme des Garçons and released only at Dover Street Market Ginza, dated AD2012, in the smallest size 34.
The Piece
Vanson Leathers of Massachusetts has made motorcycle jackets since 1974, and its heavy American cowhide and racing hardware made it a natural partner for Comme des Garçons, whose designers have commissioned Vanson for special pieces across several lines. Dover Street Market Ginza, opened by Rei Kawakubo in 2012, marked its arrival with a handful of store exclusives, and a yellow Vanson rider was among the most striking.
This is that jacket. It is cut in the classic asymmetric zip rider pattern with wide notched lapels and snap-down collar points, belted waist with roller buckle, zipped chest and hand pockets, zipped cuffs and snap adjuster tabs at the back. The leather is a full yellow cowhide with a soft hand and a light natural grain, lined in yellow satin of cupro and polyester. Dark zip tapes and polished hardware frame the colour.
At the neck sit the Vanson Leathers Boston label, marked Made in USA and size 34, and a Dover Street Market woven label. The Comme des Garçons care label inside carries the code WJ-J409 and the AD2012 date, and the leather is stamped with a Vanson production number.
Size 34 is the smallest Vanson size and fits closely: 39.5 cm across the shoulders and 42.5 cm pit to pit with a 59 cm body. It suits a slim man or a woman of a UK 8 to 10.
