A reconstructed tartan jacket from Undercoverism’s Spring-Summer 2005 But Beautiful II season, built from overlapping panels of red check with pocketed flaps, raw edges and a twisted lapel.
The Piece
Jun Takahashi’s But Beautiful series ran across several seasons in the mid-2000s, and its second chapter, Spring-Summer 2005, pushed the house’s punk vocabulary towards something stranger and more sculptural. Familiar garments were taken apart and reassembled so that they seemed to grow from one another, and tartan, the oldest symbol of British punk, was the natural material for it.
This jacket is made from several red tartans in slightly different scales, pieced on the bias and straight grain so the checks collide. The front is a cascade of overlapping flaps, button tabs and patch pockets, with a high stand collar that folds into a twisted lapel. The sleeves carry their own patch pockets and button cuffs, the back is cut with an angled yoke and a narrow black tab, and hems and seams are left raw by design.
The interior carries the Undercoverism For Rebels label, size 3, with the Undercover Co. Ltd composition tag, made in Japan, polyester 70% and rayon 30%. A second tag notes that the item will fray with repeated wearing and washing, which is part of the design.
Size 3 wears like a men’s large with a relaxed, slightly cropped line. It is a museum-level example of Takahashi’s reconstruction work and wears brilliantly over black.
