A substantial cast-metal warrior traditionally identified as Uesugi Kenshin, the Sengoku-era commander of Echigo, captured mid-motion in a disciplined, forward-driving stance beneath a crested kabuto. At approximately 52 cm and 15.6 kg, it reads from across a room with the weight and presence of serious metalwork.
The Piece
The figure depicts a Sengoku-style armored commander in a dynamic combat posture, his helmet carrying a distinctive crest. The sculpting emphasizes tension and momentum over ornament, so that the work performs as a single strong gesture in an interior, heavy, quiet and decisive, carrying historical atmosphere without needing a crowded display.
Uesugi Kenshin (1530–1578) is remembered as a disciplined commander of Echigo and a central figure of the Sengoku era. In art and popular memory he represents strategic austerity, leadership expressed through posture, restraint and decisive movement. He is inseparable from the legendary rivalry with Takeda Shingen centered on the Battles of Kawanakajima, and was celebrated as a devout follower of Bishamonten, guardian deity of war and protection; popular storytelling sometimes treats him as Bishamonten's avatar, a warlord who becomes almost a sacred war-guardian.
The kabuto with its prominent horns and crest and the aggressive stance fit the Sengoku hero silhouette long associated with Kenshin. Because many warlords are represented in similar armor and battle-stance figures are often labeled Kenshin, the identification is traditional rather than a documented portrait. The dark patina and metallic highlights indicate cast metal of the type commonly described as bronze.
