Tetsujin 28-go, one of Japan's most culturally significant robot characters, rendered as a spinning saucer. Nomura's 1960s friction disc trades legs for a circular, futuristic abstraction, character iconography set in motion, and this example survives unrestored with its graphics still legible and strong.
The Piece
Produced by Nomura Toy Co. in the 1960s, the disc reflects a period when character licensing merged with toy innovation for both domestic and export markets. Instead of a walking robot or vehicle it adopts a saucer-like form, a design that allowed dynamic motion, vivid lithography and fewer mechanical failures, and that made a strong impression on store shelves.
A stylized Tetsujin head rises from the disc as a central dome evoking command and control, control-panel graphics reinforce the fantasy of piloting machinery, and a character portrait badge humanizes the machine and ties it to the manga narrative. The circular geometry belongs to the futurism and space-age aesthetics of Showa media, placing the toy at the meeting point of manga culture, postwar futurism and export-driven design.
Disc toys often outlived walking robots because they had fewer moving parts, no fragile leg assemblies and less risk of catastrophic breakage, yet character discs were played with heavily and clean survivors are increasingly scarce. Nomura's production quality is a large part of why this one remains intact. It serves best as a visual anchor in a robot or manga collection rather than as a mechanical centerpiece.
