The Piece

The varsity jacket, historically tied to American collegiate identity, is reinterpreted here through a distinctly Japanese visual system centered on seasonality, impermanence and national identity. The flower motifs are integrated into the composition rather than dominating it as branding, so the piece reads less like merchandise and more like a portable visual composition.

The back panel is the primary narrative field. A sakura tree in dense embroidery spreads in a controlled explosion of blossoms that occupies the whole surface, and falling petals carry the image beyond the tree itself, giving it a sense of motion and ongoing transformation.

On the front, smiling Murakami Flower motifs punctuate the surface. Their simplified faces set up a dialogue with the more naturalistic sakura tree, traditional symbolism against contemporary iconography, while a Japan script anchors the whole culturally.

The classic varsity structure is kept: a wool body for warmth and texture and leather sleeves for durability and contrast, raised by layered embroidery, careful color balance and sound stitching. The pastel pink body and cream sleeves avoid harsh contrast, making a harmonized palette that reinforces the sakura theme. Worn, it becomes a moving artwork; displayed, a textile sculpture.
