Doraemon and his companions rise into a clear blue sky above a horizon of Murakami's smiling flowers in this hand-signed silkscreen from the artist's Doraemon series. Issued in an edition of 100, it turns a generational icon of Japanese childhood into a composition of optimism and limitless possibility.
The Piece
The work combines Murakami's Superflat aesthetic with one of Japan's most enduring cultural icons. Doraemon and his companions are shown in upward motion against a clear blue sky; a cloud forms their base, but the direction is unmistakably forward and above. Murakami does not merely reference Doraemon, he amplifies its core emotional message.
Doraemon is a cultural constant in Japan, spanning generations. Merged with Murakami's visual language, the collaboration becomes a translation in which childhood nostalgia is converted into contemporary art. The flowers at the base are not decorative: they form a repeating horizon, an infinite ground from which the characters rise, giving the image a symbolic structure of growth, movement and expansion.
The palette is deliberately uncomplicated, blue sky, white clouds and saturated characters, making the work instantly readable across cultures. The print stems from the Superflat Doraemon exhibition at Perrotin Tokyo, with its 2019 origin and 2021 release, and holds a key position within Murakami's crossover practice between fine art and popular culture.
