Abrigo happi remake de estandarte festivo Tairyō-Bata, retrato de guerrero y caballo de guerra ceremonial, estilo Nebuta

Vintage festival-banner cloth in the tradition of the tairyō-bata, Japan's great-catch flags, reconstructed into a relaxed happi-style coat. A fierce warrior faces forward while a decorated warhorse surges across the back, a portable mural of folklore and color.

The Piece

The imagery is consistent with textiles inspired by tairyō-bata, celebratory fishing banners, together with the theatrical character of Nebuta and Japanese festival art. Rather than preserving the cloth as a static wall hanging, the maker has cut and reconstructed it into a coat, so the original illustration now moves with its wearer and the textile itself forms the garment's architecture.

The front is dominated by a forceful warrior face with exaggerated brows, a commanding mustache and an unwavering gaze, its enlarged features in the idiom of festival imagery meant to read from a distance, amid music and crowds. Raised brows, a firm mouth and strong facial lines communicate alertness, courage and resolve, lending the coat a protective, mask-like quality without making it military dress.

The reverse presents a decorated warhorse in harness, surging through flags, waves and color; in Japanese warrior imagery the horse is bound to rank, mobility and martial presence, and here it becomes the hero of the back panel. Flags cut diagonally, waves curve and lines radiate from the figures, so the whole garment seems caught in motion, the imagery running across seams, sleeves, edges and closures as on the original banner.

The cloth is a substantial Japanese cotton or cotton-rich banner textile with a durable, canvas-like hand; its imagery appears to have been made by traditional-style dyeing, pigment application, hand-brushed work or a combination of printing techniques, with natural variation in color density, line and texture. The coat has a button front, broad body panels, a relaxed shoulder, wide sleeves and layer-friendly proportions, and because the maker worked around an existing illustration, cutting and composition had to be resolved together. The warrior and horse each hold their own territory: the front confronts, the back releases the narrative.

The banner textile appears vintage or pre-loved, while the reconstruction into its present form is later and may be contemporary. It is not represented as an unchanged historical happi coat from a documented festival, nor as an official Nebuta costume or float textile; it is a Japanese remake combining an older pictorial cloth with a newer wearable structure, and the exact age of the banner remains undetermined.

Tairyō-Bata and Nebuta

Tairyō-bata literally means "great catch flag." These highly visible banners were raised to announce a successful catch and displayed to wish for maritime safety, prosperity and an abundant season, at celebrations, the launch of a new vessel or other milestones in a fishing community. Made to be recognized across wind, sea and distance, they favor strong outlines, oversized figures, saturated contrasting color, dynamic waves and clouds, auspicious animals, heroic or legendary characters and expansive compositions.

The warrior also evokes Aomori's Nebuta tradition, whose monumental illuminated floats portray ancient warlords, historical heroes, mythological figures and kabuki characters with enlarged eyes and dramatic expressions, paraded with drums, flutes and dancers. The coat's energy is Nebuta-like: heroic, confrontational, brilliantly colored and built for spectacle.

Wearing and Display

Against black denim and boots, wide-leg trousers, raw indigo jeans, hakama-inspired pants, workwear or minimal monochrome layers, the complex textile is best set off by plain black, charcoal, cream, indigo or deep brown. Worn open it shows the full width of the front; closed it takes on a compact, armor-like look. On a broad wooden hanger or a textile-safe mount, front and back serve as alternating art panels.

Gentle specialist cleaning by someone experienced with vintage, hand-dyed or Japanese textiles is recommended; avoid machine washing, aggressive detergents, bleach, tumble drying and prolonged soaking, and store cool and dry, away from prolonged direct sunlight.

Authenticity & Care

The original purpose of each textile panel cannot be confirmed independently, but its subject matter, scale and coloration align strongly with Japanese ceremonial, fishing-banner and festival-art traditions. Every piece is examined and documented in Japan before dispatch and is offered with the Japonista authenticity guarantee.
