Tailor Toyo TT11145 sets two worlds back to back: a chocolate-brown souvenir face with eagles, Mount Fuji and an embroidered map of Japan, and a midnight-navy reverse where a turquoise mutant and a silver flying saucer appear beneath the word “MUTANT.” A discontinued archive design, it treats atomic-age science fiction with the gravity usually reserved for dragons and tigers.
The Piece
This Tailor Toyo reversible sukajan, model TT11145, pairs one of the most eccentric science-fiction designs in the brand’s archive with a traditional embroidered Japan-map souvenir jacket. Japanese collector archives record the configuration as “Ahmet Mutant × Eagle and Japan Map” (アーメット・ミュータント+鷹・日本地図). The TT11145 number appears across several Tailor Toyo reversible designs and colorways of the same production family; this exact pairing is confirmed by multiple Japanese collector archives and specialist references, and comparable examples are recorded in Japanese sizes M and L, in polyester satin with fully reversible embroidery. It is a discontinued model, no longer part of the current Tailor Toyo catalog.
The first face reads as a restrained heritage sukajan. A lustrous chocolate-brown body is framed by champagne-cream raglan sleeves, with brown racing stripes running from shoulder to cuff, and the collar, cuffs and waistband striped in cream, burgundy, navy and mustard. Two compact eagles descend symmetrically across the chest, each with extended white wings, brown and golden body feathers, lowered talons, a curved yellow beak and fine pale outlines; their modest scale leaves generous negative space and makes this the easier side to wear. Across the back, a large outline of Japan in white, brown and golden thread carries the place names Sapporo, Sendai, Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Kure, Fukuoka and Sakurajima, set in the imperfect, hand-composed manner of vintage souvenir maps rather than as precise cartography. A large eagle in white, pale gold and brown descends over the upper left of the map, talons reaching toward the archipelago, beneath flowing golden “Japan” script, while Mount Fuji rises beside it with a turquoise-blue summit, white snow cap, brown lower slope and a curling white line of cloud or mist. That flash of turquoise quietly foreshadows the reverse. The chocolate-and-champagne palette is less common than the standard black, navy or royal-blue sukajan grounds and lends the face a warm, sepia-like character.
Reversed, the jacket becomes atomic-age wearable art. The midnight-navy body is framed by golden-champagne sleeves with navy stripes along the raglan seams, and the striped ribbing shifts to navy, cream, mustard and burgundy. Across the upper back, “MUTANT” is stitched in pale block lettering above an elongated humanoid with turquoise skin, long narrow limbs, large orange-rimmed eyes, a pale textured face, brown shorts, a white draped or armored garment and exaggerated hands and feet, standing in an otherworldly upright posture, while a small silver-white flying saucer approaches from the lower right. A smaller figure appears on the left chest, and the right chest carries the cursive name “Ermit” above the katakana アーメット, transcribed in collector records as Ahmet, Amet or Ermit; the lettering belongs to the design rather than reading as a conventional Japanese word. On both faces, angled welt pockets are finished with arrow-shaped trim, in gold on the mutant side.
The creature draws on the lurid aesthetics of 1950s science-fiction posters, rubber-suit monsters, pulp illustration and early cinematic extraterrestrials, yet it is solemn rather than menacing, a lonely visitor embroidered with the seriousness normally given to heraldic beasts. Where traditional souvenir jackets recorded real bases, ships, islands and duty stations, this reverse turns the same language toward an impossible destination, echoing the postwar fascination with radiation, technology, flying saucers and life beyond Earth. On the brown face, the eagle physically overlaps the map, making the meeting of American symbolism and Japanese geography explicit. One side holds geographic memory, with its named cities, Mount Fuji and eagle; the other holds speculative travel and an invented identity.
The souvenir jacket took shape in the immediate postwar period, when American servicemen stationed in Japan commissioned embroidered jackets commemorating their units, bases and experiences, distributed through military-base PX channels; the name sukajan is associated with Yokosuka. Tailor Toyo, the specialist souvenir-jacket division of Toyo Enterprise, preserves that visual vocabulary and the reversible satin construction that distinguishes traditional examples from ordinary fashion bombers.

- Good pre-owned vintage condition: the major embroidered compositions keep clear outlines, vivid color and strong visual impact, and no major loss to the central embroidery is apparent.
- General creasing and wrinkling throughout the satin, with natural tonal variation from the direction of the fabric.
- Minor surface marks and discoloration on the pale sleeves.
- Light age-related wear around the cuffs, collar and waistband, with mild fuzzing or softening of the rib-knit trim.
- Possible small thread ends around the embroidery; light rubbing around the pocket openings and zipper areas.
- Minor unevenness from folding and storage, and small imperfections that may not appear clearly in every photograph.
- The brown body, Japan-map embroidery, mutant figure, chest motifs and sleeve panels remain visually well preserved.
- Satin reacts strongly to light: brown areas may read as espresso, bronze or warm aubergine, navy as indigo, blue-black or deep purple, and the cream and gold sleeves as ivory, champagne, pale bronze or warm yellow. The photographs form an essential part of this condition record.
Sizing Guidance
Comparable TT11145 examples in Japanese size M have been recorded at around 55–57 cm across the chest, approximately 57–60 cm in body length and approximately 82–85 cm in sleeve reach from the center back; L examples have been recorded at around 58 cm across the chest and 88 cm sleeve reach. These are model references, not guaranteed measurements for this jacket.
Traditional Japanese sukajan run shorter in the body than contemporary Western jackets, with rounded bomber silhouettes, raglan sleeves and compact proportions. A wearer who usually takes a Western medium may find a classic relaxed fit; a Western large, a closer or shorter fit. Useful comparison points are chest width pit to pit, body length from the rear collar seam, sleeve reach from the center back neck, hem width, upper-arm width and cuff opening.
Embroidery Technique
Dense filled areas are combined with finer outlining, and the variation in stitch density gives the artwork depth without making the garment rigid.
- Layered eagle feathers
- Thin map boundaries and handwritten-style place names
- Facial detailing on the mutant and textured white drapery
- Small spacecraft accents
- Delicate Mount Fuji shading
- Curved script lettering
