A rare sumo-centered sukajan by Switch Embroidered Garments. The black velour face shows a Yokozuna beneath Mount Fuji and a rising sun with 横綱 on his ceremonial apron; reversed, quilted royal-blue and golden-yellow satin erupts with a tiger, an eagle and a dragon twisting through clouds and waves.
The Piece
This is a true double-faced statement jacket: one side restrained, traditional and almost museum-like, the other saturated pop color with classic rockabilly sukajan energy. On the softly aged black velour back a powerful rikishi stands beneath the scripted word “Yokozuna,” framed by a red rising sun, snow-capped Mount Fuji, pale clouds and curling ocean waves; his ceremonial apron carries the characters 横綱, reinforcing the championship sumo theme. The embroidery is worked mainly in ivory, cream, gold, red, pale blue and muted pink so that the figure emerges clearly from the deep ground.
The front of this face is comparatively quiet, with mirrored ceremonial sumo emblems embroidered with 横綱 characters and long golden cords, keeping the main narrative for the back. Cream rib-knit trim at the collar, cuffs and waistband gives the side a classic mid-century souvenir-jacket character.
The reverse transforms the jacket. The body turns royal blue with brilliant golden-yellow sleeves, quilted diamond stitching, contrasting sleeve stripes and striped ribbing. The chest carries a roaring tiger head and a descending eagle with spread wings, and across the back an elaborate dragon coils through foaming waves and stylized clouds beneath embroidered Japan script, in blue, gold, cream, brown and white: a collegiate-meets-Japonisme palette.
Together the faces form an embroidered anthology of Japanese popular imagery. The sumo wrestler gives an unmistakable sporting and cultural identity, with Mount Fuji, the rising sun and the waves forming a landscape of national imagery around him. The reverse draws on the traditional sukajan bestiary: the dragon for authority, transformation and energy, the tiger for courage, strength and vigilance, the eagle for power, vision and freedom, and waves and clouds for movement, endurance and the forces of nature. Eight major motifs appear across one garment.
