Rollo colgante de la tríada de Shaka con los dieciséis Arhats, Jūroku Rakan, tinta y color sobre seda, de Edo a Meiji

Shakyamuni sits enthroned between Fugen on his elephant and Monju on his lion, while below the Sixteen Arhats gather in a rugged mountain world of cliffs, clouds, a tiger and a dragon-like creature. Mounted in regal purple and muted gold brocade, this ambitious late Edo to Meiji painting is less a portrait than an entire painted spiritual universe.

The Piece

The scroll appears to depict the Shaka Sanzon, or Shakyamuni Triad, together with the Jūroku Rakan, the Sixteen Arhats. At the summit sits Shaka Nyorai, the historical Buddha and teacher of the Dharma, framed by a large halo and surrounded by clouds that separate the celestial realm from the earthly landscape below. To the viewer's left, a bodhisattva seated on an elephant is identified by that mount as Fugen Bosatsu (Samantabhadra), embodiment of practice, compassionate action and meditation, the elephant signifying strength, patience and disciplined progress. To the viewer's right, a bodhisattva on a lion is Monju Bosatsu (Manjushri), transcendent wisdom that cuts through ignorance, the lion expressing the fearless authority of the teaching, the lion's roar of the Dharma.

The lower field belongs to the Arhats, enlightened disciples who remained in the world to preserve and protect the Buddha's teachings. Unlike idealized Buddhas and bodhisattvas, they are portrayed as highly individual human figures: stern, eccentric, contemplative, humorous, weathered or intensely alert. Here they inhabit a dramatic mountain landscape of cliffs, clouds, trees, animals, staffs and vessels, turning, bending, conversing, meditating and looking across the scene rather than standing in a rigid row. One figure appears beside a tiger and another with a dragon-like creature, linking the human world of practice with the supernatural realm of Buddhist legend.

Rakan paintings became important devotional and ceremonial images in East Asian Buddhism; in Japan they were especially prominent in temple art and embraced within Zen culture, though devotion to the Arhats extended beyond any single school. Set beneath the triad, the composition forms a clear spiritual hierarchy, with Shakyamuni as awakened teaching, Monju as wisdom, Fugen as compassionate practice and the Arhats as preservation and transmission, a visual lineage of wisdom flowing from the Buddha into the world. A complete program of this kind offers far greater narrative and iconographic depth than the more familiar single images of Buddha, Daruma, Kannon or a solitary Arhat.

The painting is executed in restrained ink and subdued color, likely on silk, with selective touches of red, green, black, brown and muted mineral tones. The upper register is symmetrical and ceremonial; below, the composition grows animated, and each Arhat receives a distinct psychological character through eyebrows, eyes, mouths, head shapes, beards, robes and body language. Time has deepened the palette into a harmonious field of bronze, umber, charcoal, moss green and faded red. The elaborate mounting of purple floral brocade, subdued grey-gold textile, patterned borders, hanging cords and decorated wooden roller ends lends an almost ecclesiastical presence while setting off the painting's earth tones.

Display Suggestions

Because of its vertical scale and intricate imagery, the scroll is best hung where it can be seen both from a distance and at close range: a meditation room, Buddhist altar or memorial space, tokonoma, tea room, library or study, a Japandi or wabi-sabi interior, or a gallery wall devoted to Asian art.
