Sukajan reversible Senbu 戦武, serpiente del Dairokuten Maō, bordado de espada y calavera, satén negro y marfil

Senbu (戦武) builds an entire dark mythology on this reversible sukajan, summoning the Sixth Heaven's Demon King through serpent, blade, skull, flame and rose rather than portraiture. One face blazes in black and ivory; the other turns tonal and gothic, so the jacket reads less as a souvenir than as a personal banner.

The Piece

This is effectively two statement jackets in one. One face explodes outward in high-contrast black and ivory, dominated by an enormous vertical composition of a serpent entwined around a sword or long blade, with skull imagery, fire, flowers and dense Japanese-style ornament; the pale sleeves become further canvases for embroidery. Reversed, the mood turns almost entirely nocturnal: an all-black and charcoal tonal face carrying skulls, roses, crests, crossed weapons and prominent “SETTEN MAOU” and “6TH OF THE DEVIL” lettering. The result sits between sukajan heritage, Japanese tattoo art, Sengoku warlord iconography, bōsōzoku attitude, gothic streetwear and elaborate wagara embroidery.

Rather than relying on the familiar souvenir-jacket vocabulary of Mount Fuji, eagles, tigers or cherry blossoms, the design builds a mythology around the figure of the Sixth Heaven Demon King, and it does so through symbols rather than portraiture: serpent, sword, skull, fire, crossed weapons, roses and flowers, crests, military-style typography, dark heraldic graphics, Japanese lettering and extensive embroidered sleeve artwork. From a distance it is an immediately powerful black-and-ivory sukajan; up close it becomes a textile puzzle of small motifs, words and visual references, and the whole narrative changes when the jacket is turned inside out.

On the black-and-ivory face, the long blade rises up the center of the back like the spine of the composition. A serpent winds through and around it, while skull imagery, flames and darker floral elements gather below and spread outward into the shoulders and sleeves, in the interlocking manner of irezumi composition. In Japanese imagery the snake can suggest transformation, regeneration, danger, persistence, hidden power, supernatural presence, guardianship, and death and renewal; the sword carries warrior culture, resolve, discipline, conflict, authority and mortality. The rigid vertical blade against the fluid, climbing serpent gives the back great movement, the flame forms behave like an aura around the central design, and the flowers set beauty beside decay and soft petals beside sharpened steel. The skull, a motif that crosses Buddhist reflection on impermanence, memento mori, tattoo culture, rock, biker and punk graphics and contemporary wagara streetwear, is integrated into the composition rather than treated as an isolated gothic novelty.

The ivory sleeves are worked as an additional embroidered canvas, not merely a color block: dark thread and multicolor motifs stay clearly visible against the cream ground, giving the jacket nearly 360-degree visual interest. The front of this face keeps the black body and ivory sleeves but turns to compact emblematic motifs instead of repeating the back: crest-like embroidery, circular or heraldic insignia, Japanese-inspired symbols, sleeve embroidery, a striped rib-knit collar, cuffs and hem, and a metal zip closure. The restraint at the front leaves the back as the main spectacle.

The second face is overwhelmingly black and charcoal, its artwork deliberately rendered in lower contrast for a stealthier, almost military-gothic presence. The back gathers large lettering, skull imagery, roses, heraldic emblems, what appear to be a pair of crossed historical-style firearms, symmetrical insignia, ornamental script and Maou-related wording, as if for an imaginary outlaw regiment or supernatural military order. “SETTEN MAOU” appears as a stylized Roman-letter treatment woven into the heraldic arrangement, and the unconventional English of “6TH OF THE DEVIL” works visually rather than as prose, in the way Japanese subculture fashion filters Western biker, military and tattoo aesthetics through Japanese imagery. The theme evokes 第六天魔王, Dairokuten Maō, the Demon King of the Sixth Heaven, a phrase inseparable in Japanese popular culture from dramatic Sengoku imagery of overwhelming warlord power; here warrior symbolism becomes skulls, military authority becomes crests, battle becomes crossed weapons, and the supernatural Maou becomes gothic embroidered streetwear. The reverse does not feel like a secondary lining; it reads as a second chapter.

Condition

• Pre-owned collectible Japanese garment; from the photographs the jacket appears visually strong overall, with the embroidery retaining impressive definition and presence.
• Characteristics typical of a pre-owned satin-style sukajan may include light wrinkling, storage creases, minor surface pulls or snags, small embroidery irregularities, occasional projecting threads, light rib-knit wear, gentle zipper patina and minor signs of previous handling or wear.
• The glossy textile shows changing highlights with lighting and fabric direction, which is normal for satin-like materials and can look more dramatic in photographs.
• The photographs form an essential part of the condition record.

Reading the Senbu Name

The two characters of the label evoke martial imagery: 戦 relates to battle or war, and 武 to the martial or warrior sphere. Without treating the name as a literal translation of the brand identity, the typography reinforces the militaristic, Sengoku-inspired character of the garment, and the elaborate label gives the piece an unmistakably Japanese wagara-fashion presentation rather than the anonymous construction of a generic souvenir jacket.

Lineage and Subculture

The sukajan developed as a Japanese souvenir-jacket tradition of elaborate embroidery and East-West visual combinations, and modern Japanese brands have since reinterpreted it through samurai themes, Buddhist imagery, demons, skulls, dragons, manga, tattoo art, Sengoku warriors, biker graphics and subculture references. This 戦武 piece belongs to that later, maximalist branch: less about tourism, more about identity. Its graphic density, gothic lettering, embroidered skulls, brand identity and fashion-oriented reversible concept place it among later reinterpretations, and modern wagara pieces become especially desirable when a design is discontinued, unusually elaborate, difficult to find overseas or tied to a memorable theme.

Although it is a sukajan rather than a bōsōzoku tokko-fuku coat, its attitude overlaps strongly with Japanese delinquent and motorcycle fashion: oversized lettering, dramatic back artwork, martial symbolism, a customized visual identity, crest-like emblems, large sleeve graphics and clothing that functions almost as a personal banner. It speaks to collectors of Japanese biker, yankii, punk and rock fashion.

Wearing and Display

The black-and-ivory face is the more traditional sukajan presentation, higher in contrast, with the large serpent-and-sword artwork and the most visible embroidery; it pairs with black denim, distressed jeans, engineer or combat boots, high-top sneakers, leather trousers, plain black T-shirts and Japanese biker, rockabilly, punk, Visual Kei-inspired or Amekaji styling. The black face is tonal, gothic and biker in character, more understated from a distance, and works with monochrome outfits, black cargos, wide trousers, dark denim, minimal sneakers, boots, silver accessories and leather layers.

Displayed flat or on a wall, the serpent face reads beautifully because the pale sleeves frame the central artwork; turned around, the darker side becomes an embroidered gothic banner. It suits collections built around sukajan, Sengoku imagery, wagara fashion, skulls, snakes, Japanese tattoo art, biker clothing, bōsōzoku culture, Japanese rock fashion and embroidered wearable art.

Authenticity & Care

The label visibly carries the Japanese characters 戦武, romanized by collectors as Senbu; the piece is a modern wagara production rather than an original 1940s–1960s souvenir jacket. Every piece is examined and documented in Japan before dispatch and is offered with the Japonista authenticity guarantee.
