The Piece

Since Hedi Slimane's arrival at the house in 2012 the motorcycle jacket has been the Saint Laurent garment, a slim, high-armholed rider that defined a decade of rock and roll tailoring and has continued in the collections ever since. It is the jacket most collectors buy first, and the one they keep.

This example, model 506798, follows the classic pattern closely: asymmetric front zip, notched collar with snap studs, epaulettes, two vertical chest zips, a slanted lower zip pocket and a snap-flap coin pocket, a belted hem with buckle, and zipped cuffs. The leather has the soft, glossy hand associated with the house's lambskin. Small metal pins, a lightning bolt on the collar and a round badge on the lapel, add an individual touch.

The measurements correspond to a women's small: shoulder 38.5 cm, chest 41.5 cm across, length 49 cm and sleeve 57 cm. The cut is short and close, with the narrow sleeve that makes the silhouette.

Worn with a slip dress or straight black denim, it is the most reliable piece in a wardrobe.
