A reversible sukajan devoted to Ryogoku, Tokyo's historic heart of professional sumo. One face is a monumental embroidered tableau of rikishi beneath Mt. Fuji and the rising sun; the other is a carnival-bright field of tournament nobori banners, so the jacket wears as two complete garments.
The Piece
This reversible souvenir jacket celebrates Ryogoku and the pageantry, strength and ceremonial atmosphere of Japan's national sport. Rendered in deep navy, warm ivory, scarlet red, emerald green and golden ochre, it is both an expressive streetwear piece and a highly displayable work of embroidered Japanese souvenir art, offering two completely different expressions of sumo culture in one garment.
The navy-and-ivory side presents an elaborate embroidered panorama. Across the upper back the word “Japan” is embroidered in vivid red beneath a circular rising sun, and snow-capped Mt. Fuji rises behind an arena associated with Ryogoku's sumo tradition. At the center two rikishi grapple in a forceful exchange, their red and blue mawashi belts contrasting boldly with the navy satin ground. Around them appear a traditional sumo ring, or dohyō, ceremonial architecture, a suspended tassel structure inspired by the roof above the ring, a referee's gunbai fan, large embroidered “Ryogoku” lettering and Japanese characters conveying peace and harmony throughout the realm. Broad areas of satin stitch and layered threadwork define the architecture, lettering, figures and landscape, and the composition reads almost like an illustrated travel poster, combining sport, architecture and national symbolism in one tableau.
The reverse offers a dramatically different mood. Bright panels of pink, green, turquoise, yellow, blue and purple form an all-over pattern inspired by sumo nobori, the tall vertical banners traditionally displayed outside tournaments and stables, while Japanese characters repeat across the surface in varied colors to produce a lively, festival-like rhythm. This side carries the exuberant energy of Tokyo street fashion while keeping a direct visual connection to sumo ceremony and spectacle.
The construction and graphic treatment appear consistent with a late 20th- or early 21st-century Japanese souvenir jacket, combining traditional sukajan styling with a more expansive modern narrative design. Its appeal crosses from Japanese fashion to sports collecting: fully reversible construction, monumental Ryogoku embroidery, a rare all-over nobori reverse, Mt. Fuji and rising-sun imagery, dohyō and gunbai details and a strong navy-and-ivory sukajan colorway, making it equally convincing as wearable streetwear and as displayable textile art.

Symbolism Glossary
- Sumo wrestlers: discipline, strength, ritual and continuity, with ceremonial roots that connect physical power to Shinto purification and sacred performance.
- Ryogoku: internationally recognized as Tokyo's sumo district, home to the major arena, training stables, museums and restaurants of professional wrestling culture.
- Mt. Fuji and the rising sun: Fuji stands for endurance, spiritual elevation and the Japanese landscape, and the red sun gives the design the force of a classic souvenir emblem.
- Gunbai: the fan carried by the gyōji, or sumo referee, to indicate the winning wrestler.
- Nobori: tall banners announcing wrestlers, sponsors, stables and events; repeated on the reverse, they evoke arriving at a major tournament on match day.
Fit and Display
The measurements suggest a relaxed modern men's L or a more fitted XL; preferred fit and layering should be considered, and comparing the figures with a jacket already owned is recommended.
Displayed open, both sides reveal a remarkable contrast between formal embroidered storytelling and vibrant tournament graphics. It sits naturally in collections of sukajan, sumo memorabilia, Ryogoku and Tokyo culture, Japanese souvenir textiles, wagara streetwear, embroidered bombers, Japanese sporting history, reversible fashion and wearable art.
