Solid 18K yellow gold in the scarce 30mm boys' size makes this mid-1950s Oyster Perpetual Date Ref. 6627 a quietly exceptional survivor. Honestly preserved, with its sunburst silver dial and a genuine Rolex 18K buckle, it belongs to the formative decade in which the Oyster case and automatic rotor took on their enduring form.
The Piece
Crafted in the golden decade of post-war Swiss innovation, the Ref. 6627 belongs to the era when Rolex refined the Oyster case, perfected the automatic rotor and defined the language of its luxury tool watches. Examples in solid 18K gold and in the 30mm 'boys' size' represent a disappearing category of early Oyster design: understated, technically elegant and unmistakably confident.
Its serial in the 792*** range places production around 1956–1957. The 30mm case reflects a bygone sense of proportion, elegant and discreet, and deeply emblematic of mid-century dress-watch culture. The dial keeps its vintage warmth, a sunburst silver tone with gilt-style text and the classic applied markers of the period, beneath a Cyclops date magnifier with vintage curvature, the innovation Rolex introduced in the early 1950s.
The automatic movement winds smoothly and runs with the dependable rhythm expected of a well-maintained Oyster mechanism of this age. A genuine Rolex 18K solid gold buckle completes the watch on a new crocodile strap (aftermarket): purity of form without theatrics, and historical value without any need to announce itself.

Mid-Century Lineage
Rolex built its reputation on engineering milestones: the waterproof Oyster case of 1926, the perpetual rotor of 1931 and the Cyclops date lens of the 1950s. Short-production, precious-metal references such as the 6627 belong to the brand's foundational decades, when tool-watch reliability met gold-cased elegance and paved the way for the Day-Date and Datejust era. Collectors increasingly value these early 18K references for their scarcity and honest charm, particularly when they retain original dials and factory gold buckles.
