An early-1950s Rolex Bubbleback Ref. 6105 in solid 18K yellow gold, built with the uncommon left-hand crown that sets it apart from mainstream production. Its ivory dial has matured over seven decades into an honest, unrestored patina, and the automatic movement still runs with steady amplitude.
The Piece
This Ref. 6105 belongs to the transitional moment when Rolex moved from the Bubbleback architecture toward the first generation of the Datejust lineage. Crafted in solid 18K yellow gold, it comes from a small subset produced with a left-hand crown, a detail believed to have accommodated specific clientele and specialized uses. Its serial in the 77xxxx range places it in 1951 production, and it is offered here as a rare configuration preserved with dignity.
The dial has settled into a warm ivory tone through natural oxidation, an honest patina valued for its authenticity and texture, with the original printing intact. Applied gold indices cut in a distinctive upright arrow-and-leaf motif catch the light softly against the aged surface, and the red-numeral date wheel is a period hallmark, used only in the earliest cycles of Datejust-adjacent Rolex production.
The case keeps the proportions of its era: a compact but substantial 36mm form, measured bezel to bezel and excluding the crown, with the signature Bubbleback curvature that allowed Rolex's thicker rotor system to coexist with dress proportions. Placing the original Rolex Super Oyster crown on the left gives the watch an unusual visual balance, immediately distinct from mainstream models.
Mechanically the watch retains superb health, with steady amplitude and strong stability, an impressive survival for a seventy-year-old Oyster automatic. It is worn on a genuine Rolex crocodile strap closed by a genuine Rolex 18K yellow gold buckle, a complete and coherent vintage ensemble.

Bubbleback Heritage
Rolex's 1940s and 1950s mark the rise of the Oyster as a global symbol of precision, waterproofing and mechanical innovation. The Bubbleback series served as the technical proving ground for the rotor design, case architecture and layout philosophy that shaped every later Oyster Perpetual and Datejust. As the pre-Datejust era closed, transitional models with experimental layouts, distinctive dials and hand-finished gold cases became some of the most desirable mid-century Oysters, and the 6105 Lefty, from an extremely small production window, is one of the brand's most unconventional configurations.
