An oiran-inspired courtesan stands beneath a crimson wagasa and falling cherry blossom while a dragon coils, half-hidden, through the mountains behind her. Read like a woodblock print translated into thread, this reversible sukajan sets beauty and danger in one nocturnal landscape, with a quiet black-and-blush bomber on its other face.
The Piece
The embroidered face sets a nocturnal scene on deep black satin framed by warm ivory or aged cream sleeves. An elaborately dressed woman stands slightly right of center beneath a broad red wagasa, surrounded by cascading cherry blossoms, Mount Fuji, a vermilion bridge, curling clouds, water and a monumental dragon. Her face is worked in pale thread with delicate red lips and dark brows, her elaborate hair arrangement accented with gold, red and ivory ornament. Elaborate coiffure, richly layered kimono and a prominent forward obi-like ornament place her closer to an oiran or tayū-inspired courtesan than to a geisha or apprentice maiko. A pale outer robe with broad sleeves and circular floral or medallion patterns falls over darker red and black layers; the lower robe spreads in gold-edged black panels with red lining, flowers and small circular motifs, and a pale sandal or geta-like shoe shows beneath the hem.
The wagasa dominates the upper right, a dense crimson field crossed by evenly spaced pale ribs converging on a dark hub, recalling a sun disk, fan or halo and balancing the red bridge opposite. Hundreds of small embroidered flowers in white and ivory with pale yellow centers and occasional red accents arc from the upper left across the shoulders, their five-petaled forms consistent with stylized sakura, while loose petals drift around the umbrella, bridge and lower landscape as if in a spring wind.
The dragon is the jacket's most sophisticated element. Rendered in dark gray and black close to the satin ground, it first appears almost concealed, its scaled body rising behind the woman and curving across the mountains; closer looking reveals layered scales, claw-like forms and, near the lower left beneath the bridge, a head with horns, mane, open mouth, curling whiskers and teeth in fine gray linework, rising from water or cloud. Snow-capped Fuji sits between the blossom canopy and the parasol, and the red arched bridge in the lower left leads the eye toward the figure, evoking the ceremonial passage of the oiran dōchū procession. Pale scrolling forms, part cloud, part mist, part current, sweep behind the umbrella and around the lower body.
Crimson runs through parasol, bridge, kimono, hair ornament and floral details; gold, ochre, beige and bronze threads suggest brocade without metallic foil; white and silver-gray give a moonlit legibility. The back embroidery covers most of the central panel from upper shoulders to waistband, its methods varied: small repeated blossoms, dense geometric parasol, linear shadowed dragon, layered ornamental kimono, fluid clouds and water.
The second face is far more restrained: a black satin body with blush-pink sleeves, black sleeve inserts, pale pocket welts edged in pink and black, ivory and pink striped ribbing, its soft pink echoing the cherry-blossom theme. Shared striped ribbing in black, ivory and blush pink serves both faces, and the central metal zipper is configured for reversible wear. The jacket has the short, gathered sukajan shape, raglan-style sleeves and a smooth satin-finish shell; the embroidered face's pocket openings are not fully shown.

Oiran Iconography
Oiran were high-ranking courtesans of the Edo-period licensed quarters, known for elaborate dress, ceremonial processions and codified public presentation. Geisha developed as professional entertainers in music, dance and conversation, and maiko are their apprentices, associated today with Kyoto. Modern imagery often merges these figures under the word geisha; the ornate dress, theatrical coiffure and front-tied obi here belong to an oiran-inspired fantasy. The wagasa frames and reveals her, the dragon stands for water, transformation and unseen power, Fuji for endurance, and the bridge for passage between worlds.
Preservation Guidance
Professional dry cleaning by a specialist in embroidered vintage satin is recommended; do not machine wash, soak, bleach, wring or tumble dry, and do not spot-clean the discolored ivory sleeves at home. Avoid ironing directly over the embroidery, steam only lightly at a distance, and keep the satin away from rough bags, hook-and-loop fasteners and sharp accessories. Do not hang the jacket by the collar, cuffs or waistband; store it on a broad padded hanger in a breathable cover, away from sunlight, humidity, smoke, perfume and compression, and rotate it when displayed.
Authenticity & Care
No maker label or size tag is present; the jacket is offered as an unattributed Japanese sukajan of the Y2K era to early 2010s, dated by style and construction, and belongs to the modern wagara revival rather than early postwar souvenir production. Every piece is examined and documented in Japan before dispatch and is offered with the Japonista authenticity guarantee.
