A Real McCoy’s reproduction of the US Navy M-422A intermediate flight jacket in goatskin with a mouton collar, its back hand-painted as a one-off with a “Queen of the Pirates” pin-up referencing Torpedo Squadron VT-2. Naval, hand-painted and less common than the A-2, it carries real carrier-aviation lore.
The Piece
A finely executed reproduction of the U.S. Navy M-422A intermediate flight jacket, from the NZ-era production lineage of The Real McCoy’s, rendered in supple, grain-rich goatskin with a real mouton fur collar, a period-correct Talon zipper and a heavy knit waistband. The back carries a one-off hand-painted “Queen of the Pirates” pin-up composition, applied after production, referencing Torpedo Squadron VT-2.
The M-422A was issued to U.S. Navy aviators during WWII, particularly those operating from aircraft carriers. Warmer and heavier in presence than its Army cousin the A-2, with fur at the collar against cold wind, it belongs to carrier missions launched over open water. Torpedo squadrons such as VT-2 faced some of the highest casualty rates in the Pacific Theater, flying low, slow and straight into anti-aircraft fire, so the squadron reference points to one of the most dangerous roles in aerial warfare.
The back is where the jacket breathes. A seated pin-up, poised and almost aware of being watched, is framed in a soft aura that mimics period nose-art technique. Above her runs the inscription “Queen of the Pirates”; to the left, “Torpedo Squadron VT-2”, a real U.S. Navy torpedo squadron, which ties the piece to carrier-based aviation lore rather than generic WWII imagery. Below, a horizon line of aircraft silhouettes fades almost into memory. The effect is haunting rather than loud.
Goatskin speaks quietly in a tight, pebbled, resilient grain, suited to naval use where flexibility and durability mattered more than rigidity. Natural grain shows across the surface, early patina is forming along the seams, the panels are softening with wear, and the mouton collar remains full, anchoring the silhouette. Construction follows period-correct naval specification stitching, and the cut is small and tight in the vintage manner.
The jacket sits at a rare intersection for collectors: naval, a field less saturated than Army Air Forces pieces; hand-painted as a one-off rather than a factory repeat; by The Real McCoy’s; with a pin-up motif of strong emotional and visual pull; and on the M-422A model, which is less common than the A-2.
