A Rainbow Country A-2 reworked through a one-off Custom King program into a singular aviation art object. Its back panel stages a Nakajima Type II fighter in a cloud vignette with Hinomaru symbolism, turning the most American of flight jackets toward Japanese wartime aircraft imagery.
The Piece
The jacket is at once a high-grade Japanese A-2 reproduction and a singular custom object. Built on a Rainbow Country base and developed through a one-off full custom program under the Custom King banner, attributed to Kusano-san, it departs from conventional American squadron narratives and embraces the Nakajima Type II fighter and the wider visual language of Imperial Japanese wartime aircraft art.
The back panel is the soul of the garment. A hand-rendered aircraft sits in a cloud-like field, with lettering reading “Nakajima Type II Fighter”, an interceptor slogan and kanji detail arcing above and below. The vignette isolates the plane as nose-art portraiture rather than technical diagram, and the Hinomaru references move the imagery away from familiar Allied themes into rarer territory. Some lettering is partially stylized, which preserves the presence of the painter's hand.
The whole is coherent: a dark leather body shading from deep seal to russet brown, a red-brown waistband rib, mixed-tone sleeve knits and an internal leather rising-sun motif. The front keeps a clean A-2 pocket layout with minimal interruption, with custom insignia at the sleeve and further custom details inside. Surface variation, rubs and tonal irregularity give the leather an aged, inhabited depth against which the artwork reads clearly.
Rainbow Country is respected in the Japanese reproduction world for leatherwear of real substance, and the base gives the artwork the authority it needs. The jacket makes no claim to be a wartime original; it stages a dialogue between wartime iconography and postwar collector culture, where makers and collectors reinterpret military archetypes into new heirlooms. It speaks to collectors of Japanese reproductions, military aviation enthusiasts, art-jacket collectors and archive fashion buyers alike.
