Tanque japonés de hojalata de cuerda, de preguerra, con escotilla abatible y figura de fusilero sentado, litografía de camuflaje

Once wound, this prewar tinplate tank rolls forward as a side hatch opens on a seated rifleman, an animated reveal of real mechanical ambition. Camouflage lithography, a hand-turned turret and a motor that still runs make it a scarce survivor of a fragile and rarely preserved genre.

The Piece

This prewar Japanese tin tank represents one of the most ambitious expressions of mechanical realism in early toy manufacture. Produced before standardized mass-market safety constraints, it integrates mobility, articulated weaponry and human representation within a single armored form.

The body is built from folded and riveted tinplate panels finished in multi-color camouflage lithography. Its proportions and detailing emphasize mass and protection, closely reflecting contemporary armored vehicle design rather than stylized fantasy. A defining feature is the left-side opening hatch, which reveals a seated soldier figure bearing a rifle; this animated reveal, driven by the wind-up mechanism, adds narrative complexity and mechanical sophistication. The roof-mounted gun turret rotates by hand, and an aperture in the barrel suggests provision for projectile action, though no projectile survives.

Prewar tanks of this type were expensive, fragile and often dismantled or destroyed, and survival rates are extremely low. Examples that retain their soldier figures, opening mechanisms and active propulsion are particularly rare, valued for completeness, originality and historical density rather than surface perfection.

Set beside postwar toys of hope and motion, where vehicles express freedom, speed and aspiration, this tank represents motion as control, defense and mechanical dominance. It supplies the historical contrast a truthful narrative needs, showing how early toy culture mirrored contemporary realities with directness and technical ambition, and it deepens a collection's credibility without romanticization.

Details

• Era: Prewar period
• Origin: Japan
• Material: Folded and riveted tinplate with multi-color camouflage lithography

Condition

• Surface wear, paint loss and oxidation throughout, best read as historical evidence rather than defects; structural integrity and readability retained.
• The wind-up motor remains active, though motion is intermittent, consistent with age and internal wear; it still functions well enough to demonstrate original intent.
• Evidence of stabilization on the upper surfaces, likely a later application of clear lacquer to arrest paint loss; it does not detract from structural integrity or readability.
• No projectile survives.
