A scarlet Pleats Please turtleneck from Spring/Summer 1998, its front painted with a green dragon, a jewel-feathered phoenix, peonies and drifting clouds in the manner of Chinese auspicious prints.
The Piece
Pleats Please Issey Miyake was introduced in 1993 out of the garment-pleating research Miyake and his studio had pursued since the late 1980s. Instead of pleating cloth and then cutting it, each piece is cut and sewn two and a half to three times larger than its finished size and then fed, sandwiched between paper, through a heat press, so the pleats are set into the finished garment itself. The result is light, packable, washable and practically uncreasable, and it changed how a generation of women thought about dressing well.
In 1998 the label drew on the vivid, lucky imagery of Chinese New Year pictures and porcelain painting, and those prints have become some of the most hunted in the Pleats Please catalogue. This top, model PP81-JK704, is the red version: a close-fitting mock turtleneck in deep scarlet, with the front panel opening into a painted scene of a curling green and gold dragon, a phoenix in blue, green and crimson, pink and white peonies, swirling clouds and a golden charm. The back and sleeves are a solid red.
The pleat on this model is a fine, close one, so the top fits the body snugly and the image stays legible. It pairs naturally with black trousers or a long black pleated skirt.
The inner labels, PLEATS PLEASE with the bilingual care text and the Japanese composition tag, are present and legible.
