Parker marked its 130th year with this Duofold, the Craft of Traveling edition: a world-map barrel, compass-rose 18K nib and lapis-set cap, numbered 0523 of 1300 and boxed in its own miniature steamer trunk.
The Piece
George Safford Parker founded his pen company in 1888, and the Duofold of 1921 became its most enduring design, the oversized fountain pen of choice for statesmen and writers through the twentieth century. For the company's 130th anniversary Parker issued a series of limited Duofolds, and the Craft of Traveling celebrates the pen as a companion on long journeys.
The barrel is lacquered in deep blue and traced in gold with lines of latitude and longitude and the outlines of the continents. The gold-tone cap is engraved with a radiating compass and carries a polished arrow clip; its crown is set with a disc of lapis lazuli ringed by the words PARKER 130 YEARS AROUND THE WORLD. The end of the barrel is engraved Limited Edition 0523-1300.
The two-tone 18K gold nib, in medium, is decorated with a compass rose. The set is presented in a blue fabric travel case with tan leather straps and metal corners, lined with a printed antique world map and fitted for the pen, a bottle of matching ink and a set of cartridges, with the certificate and Parker outer box and carrier bag.
Kept in long-term storage and essentially as new, it is both a fine writing instrument and a complete collector's set.
