Owen Gaster AW1995 Sculpted Peplum Jacket in Insect Jacquard Wool, Black, Size 12, Made in England

A sculpted jacket from Owen Gaster's Autumn/Winter 1995 collection, in black wool jacquard patterned with glossy insects, fitted at the waist and flaring into a stiff, rounded peplum.

The Piece

Owen Gaster was one of the most talked-about London designers of the mid-1990s, part of the generation that included Alexander McQueen and Hussein Chalayan. His tailoring was precise and confrontational, and his work is held by the Victoria and Albert Museum. He produced only a handful of collections, so his garments rarely appear for sale.

This jacket shows his sculptural approach. It is cut in a heavy wool jacquard where rows of beetles are woven in a lustrous black against a matt ground, so the pattern appears and disappears in the light. The jacket has a narrow notched lapel, flapped hip pockets and buttoned cuffs, and below the waist it swings out into a structured, rounded peplum that holds its shape on its own. The Owen Gaster England label and size 12 are inside.

UK size 12, with a 43 cm shoulder and 44 cm across the chest, a close fit for a UK 10 to 12.

Museum holdings aside, Owen Gaster's garments are almost never seen, which makes this jacket a significant find for anyone who collects British design of the 1990s. It is both a wearable jacket and a document of a short, intense career.
