An original Type B-15B from the late 1940s, the black-label flight jacket that bridges wartime garment systems and the cleaner nylon language of the jet age. Worn, stained and distressed at the cuffs, it still expresses the design logic of the B-15B with complete clarity: mouton collar, sleeve utility pocket and short insulated flight body.
The Piece
This U.S. Air Force Type B-15B, from the immediate post-USAAF transitional period, is constructed in sage-toned nylon flight fabric over an insulated body, with ribbed knit trim, a dark brown mouton collar and a utility sleeve pocket. The model marks a pivotal moment in American aviation clothing: earlier jackets speak the language of leather and wartime cloth systems, later MA-1 lineage pieces the cleaner language of jet-age nylon and postwar standardization, and the B-15B carries both.
The mouton collar is one of the last great holdovers from the colder, heavier flight-jacket logic of the B-15 family, giving the jacket thermal seriousness and visual anchorage while the rest of the garment moves toward a more streamlined future. The utility sleeve, or pencil, pocket marks it at once as flight clothing shaped around cockpit use and pilot ergonomics. Far from a mere draft of the MA-1, the B-15B already resolves mobility, insulation, cockpit compatibility, short-waist balance and aircrew utility on its own terms.
The black label and interior structure anchor the identity of the jacket, and the collar survives as one of its strongest assets. Despite broad wear, the shell keeps the correct full yet controlled B-15B profile, and the object still reads instantly as a serious original of transitional aviation clothing. It will appeal to B-15 family collectors, USAF flight-jacket historians, nylon flight-jacket specialists and collectors who weigh condition against model significance.
