The Piece

Autumn-winter 2021 was one of Virgil Abloh’s last full collections for Off-White before his death that November, and the varsity jacket was at its heart. Titled around the idea of a Laboratory of Fun, the jacket gathers the brand’s private mythology onto a single collegiate garment, and it has become one of the defining Off-White outerwear pieces.

The body is a black wool blend and the sleeves are black cowhide leather. On the back, a large script Off-White logo over BETWEEN BLACK AND WHITE, a skeletal bird figure and a Laboratory of Fun banner; on the front, O and W letter patches, an @2013 date and further skeleton embroidery; on the sleeves, map-shaped number patches and script badges. Black-and-white striped rib finishes collar, cuffs and hem.

Size M has a classic, slightly boxy varsity fit. It is the kind of jacket that is worn simply, with black denim and white trainers, letting the patches carry the story.

This example is new and unworn, still in its protective bag with the Japanese tag reading OMJF21-518. Unworn examples of the Laboratory of Fun varsity are increasingly difficult to find.
