In "Drunk with Champagne", Takashi Murakami's flower leaves daylight behind and sits at a violet-lit bar before a champagne flute, eyes squeezed shut. Issued in an edition of only ten and preserved unopened in its original box, this Murakami.Flowers scenario print turns the icon into a protagonist caught in a moment of comic, oddly human disarray.
The Piece
Rather than a static icon, the flower appears as a fully staged emotional character. The blue-white protagonist is seated at the counter of a bar illuminated in violet and blue, lined with bottles, while a smiling attendant pours in the background. The secondary figure gives the image its theatrical structure: the flower is not alone in abstraction but situated socially, seen and served in a compromised state.
The face departs from the flower's usual open accessibility. The eyes are squeezed shut, the mouth pulled into a grimace, a small trace of blue dribbles downward and the cheeks flush orange. The register slides from slapstick to faintly pathetic to oddly human; the image begins as a joke and ends as an exposure. Two stools sit in the foreground, one occupied and one empty, a subtle note of loneliness.
The palette produces psychological slippage. Against the saturated violet room, the cool blue-white petals seem chemically altered by their surroundings, and the pale gold vertical of the champagne glass steadies the composition only to heighten the absurdity of the figure beside it. Intoxication is conveyed not through blur but through chromatic dissonance: the world remains sharp while the subject does not.
The title is a state rather than an action. Champagne, coded as refinement and celebration, becomes the instrument of facial collapse, and prestige liquefies into comic vulnerability. In works such as this the flowers become actors, acquiring a circumstance and a temporary identity, part of the more narrative phase of the Murakami.Flowers universe.
Within the corpus, an edition of ten combined with a scene-based composition places the print in an especially selective tier, rare both numerically and in its narrative specificity, more an authored moment than a standardized variant.
