Paulownia blossoms in heijō-zōgan float over a densely worked geometric ground on this heavy iron pair of abumi from the turn of the Momoyama and early Edo eras. A traditional Hosokawa attribution links it to the Higo house that joined martial power with some of the most cultivated patronage in samurai history.
The Piece
This rare pair of Japanese samurai abumi (stirrups) represents a sophisticated fusion of martial function and refined decorative artistry characteristic of the Momoyama to early Edo period. Crafted in heavy iron and finished with elaborate heijō-zōgan inlay, the stirrups reflect the aesthetic authority and elite taste associated with high-ranking warrior households.
The rounded, shell-like form, broad footrests and raised suspension arms are archetypal of late Momoyama martial equipment, designed to provide stability in mounted combat while projecting status through surface decoration. The iron ground is densely worked with geometric patterns, over which stylized paulownia motifs are rendered in contrasting metal inlay, creating a rhythmic tension between structure and ornament.
Heijō-zōgan, a technique originating in Nara, involves embedding precious metals into carved recesses in iron and demands exceptional precision and control. Its application here is balanced and restrained, suggesting workshop mastery rather than flamboyance, in keeping with the disciplined elegance favored by elite samurai clans.
The pair is traditionally attributed to the Hosokawa domain of Higo Province. The Hosokawa were renowned not only for their political power but for their cultivated patronage of the arts, and objects associated with the lineage frequently show a deliberate harmony between martial purpose and cultural refinement. With substantial size, weight and decorative presence, the pair is best suited to serious collectors of Japanese arms and armor, institutional displays, or advanced interiors seeking authentic samurai-era artifacts.
