A richly layered Miyabi Musubi reversible sukajan devoted to the mythology of the Sanada clan. One face is an illustrated battle legend, a red-armored warrior beneath flowering cherry trees and the six-coin crest; the other, in midnight black, reduces the story to an embroidered roll call of the legendary Ten Braves.
The Piece
The principal side combines deep wine-red sleeves with a black satin back panel framing a dramatic red-armored warrior beneath flowering cherry trees. The composition is built around the unmistakable six-coin Sanada crest, with sweeping purple flames, Japanese calligraphy and enormous pink-and-white chrysanthemums filling the lower half. Embroidery and printed artwork overlap throughout: cherry blossoms rise beyond the central panel onto the wine-red shoulders, forming a textured, three-dimensional canopy above the warrior, and gold-thread characters are stitched directly over the printed chrysanthemums, giving the surface the layered richness of a contemporary Japanese tattoo composition. From a distance the crimson armor and chrysanthemums dominate; closer in appear falling petals, flowering branches, flames, crests, calligraphic inscriptions and partially concealed architectural imagery.
The reverse has an entirely different personality. Smooth midnight-black satin is decorated sparingly with gold embroidery, striped beige ribbing and the six-coin crest. Gold work runs across the chest and upper back, where the names associated with the legendary Sanada Ten Braves appear with the Rokumonsen and antler-like forms; they include figures such as Sarutobi Sasuke, Kirigakure Saizō, Miyoshi Seikai and Miyoshi Isa. One side is theatrical, ornate and intensely colorful; the other quiet, shadowy and almost ceremonial, the two behaving like illustration and epilogue.
The six circular coins are the Rokumonsen, also called the Six Mon Coins or Six Linked Coins, one of the best-known emblems of the Sanada family. Ueda City describes the six-coin emblem as the Sanada crest and connects it with the traditional fare for crossing the river into the afterlife, giving it an enduring association with readiness to face death without fear. The red armor evokes the celebrated Sanada crimson battle image, the chrysanthemums give the warrior a floral frame in place of a battlefield, and cherry blossoms bring beauty, impermanence and falling-petal movement. Sanada Nobushige, popularly remembered as Yukimura, became particularly associated with the defense of Osaka Castle, while the wider Sanada family kept an important historical connection with Ueda and later Matsushiro. The Ten Braves belong primarily to the legendary and literary world around Yukimura, and their names turn the subdued reverse into a tribute to loyalty, comradeship and the heroic imagination of the Sengoku period.
A contemporary Japanese fashion sukajan, visually estimated to date from the 2000s or later: the combination of large-format printed artwork, selective raised embroidery, reversible construction and highly stylized Sengoku imagery belongs to modern wagara streetwear rather than early postwar military souvenir jackets. The detailed side presents beautifully when displayed from the back, while the restrained reverse is considerably easier to wear every day.
