Robot astronauta caminante eléctrico de hojalata Masudaya Space Man, a pilas, era Shōwa, 27–28 cm

The astronaut robot is one of the defining archetypes of postwar Japanese toy history, and this Masudaya Space Man belongs to its original science-fiction lineage rather than to licensed characters. An electric walker from the late 1950s–1960s, it was made in far smaller numbers than spring wind-ups and survives here in original, unrepainted condition.

The Piece

Unlike character-licensed robots such as Tetsujin 28, Ultraman or Kamen Rider, the Masudaya Space Man springs from Japan's own science-fiction imagination, inspired by early space exploration, pulp science fiction and Cold War futurism. A clear helmet dome reveals the pilot's face, the chest carries control-panel lithography evoking oxygen gauges and electronics, and the suit is ribbed and girded with a utility-belt motif. The proportions are those of Masudaya's electric walkers rather than its wind-ups, with the battery compartment integrated into the torso and back.

Masudaya's electric walkers were produced in far lower quantities than spring wind-ups because of their cost, complexity and the unreliable batteries of the period. In the late 1950s and 1960s Japanese tin toys divided into two currents, media-licensed heroes drawn from manga, television and tokusatsu, and original science-fiction robots and spacemen. The Space Man belongs firmly to the second, the same conceptual family as Masudaya's Radicon robots, Nomura's space explorers and Yonezawa's astronaut walkers, designs that express Japan's post-occupation optimism, fascination with NASA and belief in technology as a force shaping the future.

Original science-fiction designs have no reissues or renewed licenses behind them, and collectors tend to value them more highly over time for that reason; electric astronauts in particular rank above wind-ups in long-term desirability. Even in non-working condition, an electric walker of this kind is a display artifact valued for originality rather than function, a physical record of Japan's space-age imagination suited to advanced tin-robot collections, space-race displays and interiors built around authentic mid-century design.

Three Showa Makers

Postwar Japanese tin space robots reflected three distinct visions of the future. Daiya embodied the professional astronaut: figures of authority and realism shaped by the global space race, built in heavy-gauge tin with complex paint layering and dramatic chest emblems, so that they feel less like toys than equipment.

Masudaya captured the dream of space. Its rockets, spacemen, domes and vehicles burst with color and optimism, with clean proportions, refined helmet domes and bright lithography that translated science fiction into playful, kinetic forms and defined childhood imagination in the Showa era.

Nomura, by contrast, emphasized the machine itself. Heavy construction, simplified geometry and walking mechanisms conveyed industrial strength and engineering pride, robots built to endure rather than to entertain. Together the three makers form the foundation of Japanese space-robot history.

Authenticity & Care
