The Piece

Mihara Yasuhiro trained at Tama Art University and began with footwear, which is why the shoe has always been the centre of his house. The Original Sole, modelled by hand in clay by the designer and then cast in rubber, keeps the slumped, melted contours of that first sculpture, so every pair looks as if a classic vulcanised sneaker had been left too close to the stove. The Blakey is the house’s answer to the shell-toe court shoe, and it has become one of the most recognised silhouettes in Japanese designer footwear.

This pair is in black cotton canvas with contrast off-white stitching, the moulded shell toe cap, the MMY BLAKEY print on the quarter and an off-white heel counter. Wide flat laces in white echo the sole, and the brown rubber outsole carries the brand’s signature tread beneath the wavering white sidewall.

Worn, the Blakey reads heavier and more sculptural than the Peterson, with the toe cap giving it a squarer, almost cartoon-like front. It suits wide denim, cargo trousers and relaxed tailoring equally well. The brand’s lasts run generous; EU 44 corresponds to roughly JP 29 cm, and many wearers take one size below their usual athletic size.
