The Maison Margiela 5-Zip, the house’s deconstructed take on the riders jacket, in tan brown suede with silver-tone zips and a quilted navy lining, made in Italy and in very good condition.
The Piece
The 5-Zip is the leather jacket most closely tied to Margiela. First made under Martin Margiela himself, it takes the single riders jacket and redraws it with five exposed zips: one down the centre front, two running diagonally across the chest as pockets and two at the cuffs. The result keeps the attitude of a motorcycle jacket while removing its ornament, and the model has been reissued season after season because nothing else in the menswear canon looks quite like it.
This example is cut from soft tan brown cowhide suede, with a band collar closed by a snap tab and the five silver-tone zips set into clean, topstitched seams. The back is plain, with a single centre seam and a shaped waist panel. Inside, a quilted navy lining over light padding gives it warmth for autumn and winter, and the white four-stitch numbered label marks line 14, the men’s wardrobe collection.
The cut is slim through the body and sleeves and finishes at the hip, so it pairs naturally with a white T-shirt and dark denim or a fine roll-neck.
Suede 5-Zips appear far less often than the black leather version, and this tan shade makes it the more distinctive choice.
