The Piece

The familiar Louis Vuitton Monogram becomes something altogether more playful in this LV × TM Pochette Accessoires M13440. The foundation is unmistakably Vuitton: brown Monogram canvas, a compact rectangular pochette, polished gold-tone hardware and a zip top. Across that restrained surface, Takashi Murakami's rounded, candy-colored character forms in cream, black, pink, yellow, green and red spill over the front, turning the dark chocolate field of LV initials, quatrefoils and flowers into part of a larger pop-art composition.

Rather than a flat graphic laid over the bag, the design uses dimensional elements whose rounded profiles seem to break beyond the pochette's geometry, overlapping one another and the Monogram ground. The result sits between luxury accessory, wearable sculpture and collectible pop object: Louis Vuitton supplies the architecture, and Murakami interrupts it.

A polished chain crosses the composition diagonally, adding another graphic line and flashes of reflective gold against the matte canvas and vivid artwork. The bag is accompanied by both a natural leather strap and a chain shoulder strap. With leather it reads in the classic Vuitton accessory vocabulary; with the chain it becomes brighter, sharper and more evening-oriented, the chain echoing the gold-tone zipper and hardware.
