Louis Vuitton x Kansai Yamamoto Pochette Kabuki Mask M43532, Cruise 2018 Chain Wallet, Epi and Monogram

The kabuki face of Kansai Yamamoto, inlaid in coloured leather across a black Epi flap, on a Monogram chain wallet from Louis Vuitton's Cruise 2018 collection.

The Piece

For Cruise 2018, shown at the Miho Museum near Kyoto, Nicolas Ghesquière collaborated with Kansai Yamamoto, the designer who dressed David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust. The resulting pieces carried Yamamoto's bold kabuki faces and became some of the most collectable Louis Vuitton items of the period, especially in Japan.

The Pochette Kabuki, reference M43532, has a black Epi leather flap inlaid with a kabuki mask in white, yellow and pink leather, with black brows and pink-rimmed eyes; a fuchsia leather tab marks the back. The body is Monogram canvas. Inside, a zip compartment and six card slots in blue grained leather make it a fully working wallet.

Carried by its silver-tone chain on the shoulder or across the body, or in the hand as a clutch, it measures about 19 by 11.5 cm. The date code SP3177 places manufacture in late 2017.

A joyful piece of Japanese pop theatre in Louis Vuitton form, and an important memento of Yamamoto, who passed away in 2020.
