The Piece
In 2014 Louis Vuitton invited six figures, among them Karl Lagerfeld, Frank Gehry and Rei Kawakubo, to reinterpret the Monogram for its Celebrating Monogram project. Kawakubo's answer was characteristically radical: a classic shopper with large organic holes cut straight through the body, a bag that questions what a bag is for. The canvas original became one of the most talked-about pieces of the decade.
In 2021 the design returned in Monogram Empreinte, the house's supple calf leather with the monogram pressed into the surface rather than printed. This is the PM size, reference M45887, in Noir: a tall, open shopper with rolled leather handles, a contrasting band at the base and three cut-outs on the front with matching openings on the back, edged cleanly so the leather holds its shape.
In black, the piece becomes quieter and more architectural. The embossed monogram only shows in raking light, and the holes read almost as sculpture. It is as much an object for a collection of Comme des Garçons and Kawakubo as it is a Louis Vuitton bag.
It is carried by hand or in the crook of the arm, best with a separate pouch inside for small belongings. Worn with all black, it is the sort of piece that people recognise from across a room.

Date code, Monogram alignment, heat stamp, vachetta trim, stitching and hardware engraving are examined together and documented in Japan before dispatch.
