The original Alma in Monogram canvas, made in France in 1995: the domed Art Deco silhouette that became one of Louis Vuitton’s defining handbags.

The Piece

The Alma traces its shape to a 1930s bag made for Coco Chanel and was relaunched under its own name in 1992, named after the Pont de l’Alma in Paris. This full-size original predates the PM and BB versions sold today.

The structured base, two-way zip and rolled handles make it a practical everyday bag, and the natural leather has darkened evenly with use.

• The natural leather has tanned, with some stains; the handles show marks, rubbing and colour change.
