A matched pair of Kutani shishi, one with open mouth and one with closed, the traditional pairing that symbolizes the beginning and end of all things. Heavily built and richly glazed in blues, creams and gold, they are domestic guardians designed to hold space on a low plinth or at a threshold.
The Piece
Each figure presents a complementary stance. The bodies are powerfully modeled, with deep relief across the mane, chest and haunches, while the polychrome overglaze introduces layered blues, creams, gold accents and iron-toned details. Glaze pooling and tonal variation suggest deliberate kiln and brush control rather than factory uniformity, and the weight and thickness at the underside indicate serious ceramic mass rather than lightweight decorative ware, placing the pair closer to architectural or altar-adjacent objects than casual ornaments.
Kutani ware is associated with bold color, high-relief decoration and assertive visual presence. Although it is often discussed through vessels and plates, its sculptural output, especially shishi, is less frequently preserved in matched pairs. Shishi served a dual role as symbolic protectors and declarations of refinement; in domestic interiors they signaled cultural literacy, prosperity and a protective threshold between the inner and outer world. Staged on the floor or a low plinth, the pair reads as an architectural accent.
