Smiling, relaxed and carrying his cloth sack over one shoulder, Hotei appears here in compact form. At approximately 20 cm, this Kutani figure offers rich, gold-accented polychrome detail at an approachable scale for a shelf, entryway or display grouping.
The Piece
Hotei is one of Japan's Seven Gods of Fortune, revered as a symbol of happiness, generosity and contentment. Often shown smiling with an exposed belly and carrying a cloth sack, he represents spiritual abundance and the joy of sharing; his rounded belly signifies spiritual wealth rather than material excess.
The figure is confidently hand-modeled, emphasizing rounded volume and expressive posture, and finished in dense Kutani polychrome enamels with gold-accented detailing across the robes. The coloration is vivid yet balanced, reflecting skilled workshop production and careful control of decorative layering within established Kutani traditions.
Its manageable size suits shelves, entryways or curated groupings, and collectors of Japanese folk belief, ceramic sculpture and symbolic interior objects.
