Wearable art from the Kansai International years: a camel jumper with a patchwork of triangles, circles and bars in pink, green, blue and black that climbs the chest and runs down one sleeve.

The Piece

Between the late 1970s and the early 1990s Kansai Yamamoto sold his main line under the Kansai International label, and the knits were his loudest canvas. This jumper builds its pattern in appliqué: felted shapes stitched onto the camel knit in relief, the composition asymmetric and spilling onto the left sleeve.

The ribbed crew neck, cuffs and hem are in the camel; the back is plain with a single patch on the sleeve. Kansai International woven label at the neck. The early archive pieces have been revalued since the David Bowie retrospectives, and good examples are hard to find.

Measured flat: shoulder 54 cm (21.3 in), chest 52 cm (20.5 in), sleeve 49 cm (19.3 in), length 59 cm (23.2 in); fits as a unisex medium.
