A Junya Watanabe MAN and Karrimor down jacket from Autumn/Winter 2018, made by hand from dismantled Karrimor SL 35 rucksacks, its back carrying a complete pack face with straps and buckles.
The Piece
By Autumn/Winter 2018 the Junya Watanabe MAN and Karrimor partnership had matured into some of the most labour-intensive outerwear in the collection. Real Karrimor SL 35 Type 1 packs were taken apart in the workroom and their panels reassembled onto down jackets, so that each piece carries genuine equipment hardware and slight individual variations.
Model WB-J103, dated AD2018, is the Nylon Cordura Span jacket in the grey and red colourway. The front combines charcoal and red nylon panels with Karrimor logos, a bellows cargo pocket, a utility pouch and webbing. The back carries the full pack front with compression straps, buckles and the Karrimor logo. The hood is lined in orange, the yoke with breathable mesh, and the jacket is filled with 90% down and 10% feather. A cotton hem lining in check adds a quiet detail inside.
The fit is regular with some room for layering, and the down makes it a true winter coat. The pack elements are light, so the jacket wears like an ordinary parka while looking like nothing else on the street.
Japanese retail for this model was well above two hundred thousand yen, and the red version is the more vivid of the two colourways produced.
